The Health Improvement Commission has announced the arrival of REACT (REtirement in ACTion), an evidence-based programme designed to help older adults in Guernsey move more, live well, and maintain independence as they age.
Starting in February 2026, REACT offers a year-long series of group exercise sessions tailored for people aged 65 and over who are beginning to notice changes in their mobility. The programme combines strength, balance, and mobility training with education on healthy ageing, social interaction, and confidence-building support.
We know that physical activity is one of the most powerful tools we have to support healthy ageing. REACT is a fantastic opportunity for older adults in Guernsey to improve their mobility, stay independent, and connect with others in a supportive environment.
Developed by leading UK universities and community partners, REACT has already demonstrated success in preventing mobility decline and improving physical function. Its expansion to Guernsey has been made possible through funding from the Guernsey Community Foundation.
I’m absolutely delighted to see REACT’s strong expansion journey now reaching Guernsey. This milestone means more older adults can access a proven, life-changing programme that helps them stay mobile, independent, and connected—strengthening community ties across the island.
How the programme works
Duration: 12 months
Frequency: Twice weekly sessions for the first three months, then weekly thereafter
Extras: Social time and discussions on healthy ageing to build lasting habits and friendships
Who can join?
REACT is open to adults aged 65+ who are finding everyday activities—such as climbing stairs or getting out of a chair—more challenging. It is ideal for those seeking to improve strength, balance, and confidence in daily movement. The programme is not intended for people who are already very active or those requiring intensive rehabilitation.
Free to join – apply now
