#ChooseToChallenge - Overcoming Barriers

To celebrate International Women’s Day 2021, we’ve been speaking to local girls and women about how being active benefits them and to hear how they overcome some common barriers to keeping active.

See our original post, which includes Debbie's story here.

Next up is Sue

For the first time I can call myself a seasoned sea swimmer – I’ve only had two days off since last July.

I’d walked down to Havelet last year to consider a swim, but was feeling very apprehensive about going in, not having done a huge amount of sea swimming. Another lady encouraged me. Now there are five of us, all about the same age, me being the oldest, who last year were strangers and now are the best of friends. There is a great sense of social belonging, friendship and fun. We do laugh a lot.

We go really early in the morning, before breakfast and it’s usually still dark. I get that sense of anticipation, nerves and excitement, wondering how big the waves will be, and then what a high afterwards. I’m a Guernsey girl so it feels natural, but we’ve really got into knowing what bay might be best, depending on tides, the wind. Infact all five of us got a tide timetable for Christmas and we think of ourselves as master swimmers!
