Welcoming our recent work experience students

We were delighted to be joined recently by two work experience students who have aspirations to study and work in the field of health improvement.Pheobe West, Year 12 Blanchelande College Student, is looking to study Nutrition and Dietetics at university and Jack Sylvester Year 12 from Elizabeth College is looking to further his learning in nutrition in combination with carrying on his passion for sports Pheobe spent time with the Dietetics Department at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital and The Commission to obtain work experience in both clinical and community settings.

I have really enjoyed my work experience with Dietetics and the Health Improvement Commission this past week, as it has been highly varied and has allowed me to gain an insight into many different areas within the field of dietetics, nutrition and health. Shadowing in the hospital focused on weight loss and diabetes in a clinical setting, whereas at the Health Improvement Commission it focused on health care in the community. This involved meeting with members from each team to understand more about what they do such as Be Active, Eat well and Bailiwick Social Prescribing, as well as attending transition day talks to parents about how to provide healthy lunch boxes for their children in the aim to promote healthy eating habits from a young age in order to prevent later health related problems. Overall, this week has been insightful and has enhanced my understanding of different career paths within dietetics and nutrition for after my university studies.

Pheobe West

It has been a pleasure to have Pheobe join us for work experience and to showcase the breadth of work that is undertaken across both departments. We value the importance of access to good nutrition for the health of the population and tailored support for individuals in clinical settings and we wish Pheobe the very best with her career in Nutrition & Dietetics.

Ellie Gould, Healthier Weight Lead and Dietitian

Over four days, Jack got involved in a wide range of activities, offering valuable support across several projects. He helped us gather information on the availability of healthier options for children in local restaurants, played an active role in our Go Wild project, where he supported early years children as they explored a nature trail in search of bugs and insects, before preparing their own healthy fruit and vegetable snacks. In addition, he spent time shadowing our work in primary schools, gaining insight into how we support healthier settings for children and young people.

It’s been really interesting to see how different projects come together to help children make healthier choices. I especially enjoyed being part of the Go Wild sessions and seeing how engaged the children were.

Jack Sylvester

Jack has been a fantastic addition to the team this week. He showed great enthusiasm, got stuck into every task, and brought a positive attitude to all aspects of the work. We’ve really enjoyed having him with us
