Schools gear up for another year of veg chomping fun!

The ‘Eat Them To Defeat Them’ campaign commences next week in primary schools, supporting children to have fun exploring and tasting new vegetables. Their mission brief is simple: be heroes in the battle against vegetables taking over the world!

For the second year in a row, we have all States primary schools across Guernsey and Alderney signed up to take part in the campaign.

This repeated exposure to veg is really beneficial in helping children build healthy relationships with food. Through exploring the different textures, flavours and tastes from a variety of veg amongst their peers, healthy eating is also normalised in the school environment.

Each year we support schools to take part by providing veg boxes to reception classes and covering the costs of campaign resources. We recently expanded our offering so that each child in reception and KS1 will receive progress tracker charts and stickers to take home so that the fun can continue outside of school.

Some targeted community settings and services are also getting involved, such as the Kindred and Bright Beginnings children’s centres.

The campaign runs from Monday 2nd March until the Easter holidays, during which time almost 6,000 portions of veg will be distributed across Guernsey and Alderney. Schools and settings will carry out a number of different activities with the vegetables provided including tasting sessions, cooking, sensory exploration, crafting and much more.

Thank you goes to Milton Produce Ltd. and Channel Seaways for their continued support in distributing veg boxes across the islands. For more information about the Eat Them Defeat Them campaign, click HERE
