Moki Physical Activity Monitors

789 pupils took part in the Bailiwick of Guernsey Moki survey to find out more about the activity levels of pupils. Pupils from eleven primary schools wore a Moki physical Activity monitor at school for 2-3 days. Activity was measured for two days. The Bailiwick statistics were compared with data from pupils of a similar age, from 13 schools in the UK, collected in 2023 using the same Moki bands. Moki fitness tracker is a device that has been specifically designed for use in schools.

 Key findings

· Bailiwick of Guernsey Students are 23% more active than the Moki average, highlighting strong in-school activity levels. Boys were 22% more active and Girls     were 26% more active.

 · It is recommended that children are active for at least 30 minutes every day when at school. In Bailiwick of Guernsey schools pupils were active for an average  of 35 minutes with year 5 students being active for 42 minutes.

· UK Moki schools ranged between 4000-8000 steps during the school day whilst Bailiwick of Guernsey Schools range between 6030 and 8232 steps.

These are reassuring statistics, and it is pleasing to see that children are being given the opportunity to be active throughout the school Day. The numbers of children being active for 30+ minutes per day is testimony to the school’s commitment to The Education Strategy priority to create inclusive cultures supporting health and wellbeing for all.

Supporting schools to use the wearable activity devices provides them with valuable data on levels of activity across the school day with a breakdown by age and gender.
We now want to build on the collection of data by establishing more in-depth surveys school by school. We plan to Extend the surveys to include more accurate information on out of school activities including weekends. The data will support the schools in developing whole schools approaches to physical activity.

Alun Williams, the Be Active Lead at the Health Improvement Commission

We’ve been watching with admiration the incredible work the Health Improvement Commission has been doing with schools across the Bailiwick of Guernsey. It’s been inspiring to see data that shows how active the children are. We look forward to continuing this partnership to ensure that every child in Guernsey is given the right opportunities to be active.
