Les Bourgs Fundraiser wins sea swim award

Lizzie Stonebridge, Fundraising Administrator at Les Bourgs Hospice and founder of the 30 bays in 30 Days event has been awarded the RD Leak trophy for being active in the sea, presented by the Health Improvement Commission at Port Soif beach on Tuesday 29th July 2021.

Director and Chairperson of Les Bourgs, The Very Rev'd John Guille was in attendance for the presentation as well as Sir Richard Collas who sits on the hospice’s board.

Lizzie won this award due to running successful ’30 bays’ campaigns to get so many people out and enjoying the health benefits of sea swimming, including those with little experience.

“’30 bays’ is a simple initiative and yet it has really struck a chord with the Guernsey community. Lizzie and her team have done a great job of making swimming accessible and fun.
These types of community initiatives are by far the most effective ways to show everyone the benefits of activity.”

he original RD Leak Trophy is one of Guernsey’s most beautiful sporting trophies. The trophy was presented in the memory of RD Leak - ‘A zealous member of the Guernsey Amateur Swimming club’. The trophy was last won by La Mare de Carteret Primary school for their active sea swimming lessons.

“I feel very honoured that a lightbulb moment when visiting a relative in the Hospice has not only helped inspire people to rediscover their love of sea swimming but also become an annual fundraising event.”
