Free fruit snack fuels young sailors at The Sailing Trust
Children and young people at The Sailing Trust have enjoyed being fuelled by free fruit snacks again this summer following a successful trial with the Health Improvement Commission.
Keen to support children’s nutrition, in the same way that it supports children to be active and learn new skills, The Sailing Trust reached out to the Commission for funding support in summer 2024. The fruit was a hit, and with this positive feedback the Trust has continued the provision during summer 2025.
The fruit was very well received, and we had very minimal waste. The best feedback we had was hearing the younger pond sailors be so excited about the fact that they could have the fruit, and it was free! It was great to see children excited by and choosing to eat the fruit.
Over 600 portions of fruit were delivered to the Trust over the 6 weeks of summer, with children and young people all appreciating access to a nutritious snack.
It’s really encouraging to see a sports setting look to make changes to better support children’s health and nutrition. Through funding this trial, we’ve all been able to see the benefits and how easily something like this can be made a regular feature despite having limited space and resources within the setting.
Any sports or youth settings wanting to bring in similar changes to support children’s health are encouraged to contact the Heath Improvement Commission at hello@healthimprovement.gg.
